TrueGL: A Truthful, Reliable, and Unified Engine for Grounded Learning in Full-Stack Search

In the age of open and free information, a concerning trend of reliance on AI is emerging. However, existing AI tools struggle to evaluate the credibility of information and to justify their assessments. Hence, there is a growing need for systems that can help users evaluate the trustworthiness of online information. Although major search engines incorporate AI features, they often lack clear reliability indicators. We present TrueGL, a model that makes trustworthy search results more accessible. The model is a fine-tuned version of IBM's Granite-1B, trained on the custom dataset and integrated into a search engine with a reliability scoring system. We evaluate the system using prompt engineering and assigning each statement a continuous reliability score from 0.1 to 1, then instructing the model to return a textual explanation alongside the score. Each model's predicted scores are measured against real scores using standard evaluation metrics. TrueGL consistently outperforms other small-scale LLMs and rule-based approaches across all experiments on key evaluation metrics, including MAE, RMSE, and R2. The model's high accuracy, broad content coverage, and ease of use make trustworthy information more accessible and help reduce the spread of false or misleading content online. Efficient Annotator Reliability Assessment and Sample Weighting for Knowledge-Based Misinformation Detection on Social Media

Misinformation spreads rapidly on social media, confusing the truth and targetting potentially vulnerable people. To effectively mitigate the negative impact of misinformation, it must first be accurately detected before applying a mitigation strategy, such as X's community notes, which is currently a manual process. This study takes a knowledge-based approach to misinformation detection, modelling the problem similarly to one of natural language inference. The EffiARA annotation framework is introduced, aiming to utilise inter- and intra-annotator agreement to understand the reliability of each annotator and influence the training of large language models for classification based on annotator reliability. In assessing the EffiARA annotation framework, the Russo-Ukrainian Conflict Knowledge-Based Misinformation Classification Dataset (RUC-MCD) was developed and made publicly available. This study finds that sample weighting using annotator reliability performs the best, utilising both inter- and intra-annotator agreement and soft-label training. The highest classification performance achieved using Llama-3.2-1B was a macro-F1 of 0.757 and 0.740 using TwHIN-BERT-large.


SAFFIRA: a Framework for Assessing the Reliability of Systolic-Array-Based DNN Accelerators

Systolic array has emerged as a prominent architecture for Deep Neural Network (DNN) hardware accelerators, providing high-throughput and low-latency performance essential for deploying DNNs across diverse applications. However, when used in safety-critical applications, reliability assessment is mandatory to guarantee the correct behavior of DNN accelerators. While fault injection stands out as a well-established practical and robust method for reliability assessment, it is still a very time-consuming process. This paper addresses the time efficiency issue by introducing a novel hierarchical software-based hardware-aware fault injection strategy tailored for systolic array-based DNN accelerators.


Dual-Channel Reliable Breast Ultrasound Image Classification Based on Explainable Attribution and Uncertainty Quantification

This paper focuses on the classification task of breast ultrasound images and researches on the reliability measurement of classification results. We proposed a dual-channel evaluation framework based on the proposed inference reliability and predictive reliability scores. For the inference reliability evaluation, human-aligned and doctor-agreed inference rationales based on the improved feature attribution algorithm SP-RISA are gracefully applied. Uncertainty quantification is used to evaluate the predictive reliability via the Test Time Enhancement. The effectiveness of this reliability evaluation framework has been verified on our breast ultrasound clinical dataset YBUS, and its robustness is verified on the public dataset BUSI. The expected calibration errors on both datasets are significantly lower than traditional evaluation methods, which proves the effectiveness of our proposed reliability measurement.


Solving Coupled Differential Equation Groups Using PINO-CDE

As a fundamental mathmatical tool in many engineering disciplines, coupled differential equation groups are being widely used to model complex structures containing multiple physical quantities. Engineers constantly adjust structural parameters at the design stage, which requires a highly efficient solver. The rise of deep learning technologies has offered new perspectives on this task. Unfortunately, existing black-box models suffer from poor accuracy and robustness, while the advanced methodologies of single-output operator regression cannot deal with multiple quantities simultaneously. To address these challenges, we propose PINO-CDE, a deep learning framework for solving coupled differential equation groups (CDEs) along with an equation normalization algorithm for performance enhancing. Based on the theory of physics-informed neural operator (PINO), PINO-CDE uses a single network for all quantities in a CDEs, instead of training dozens, or even hundreds of networks as in the existing literature. We demonstrate the flexibility and feasibility of PINO-CDE for one toy example and two engineering applications: vehicle-track coupled dynamics (VTCD) and reliability assessment for a four-storey building (uncertainty propagation). The performance of VTCD indicates that PINO-CDE outperforms existing software and deep learning-based methods in terms of efficiency and precision, respectively. For the uncertainty propagation task, PINO-CDE provides higher-resolution results in less than a quarter of the time incurred when using the probability density evolution method (PDEM). This framework integrates engineering dynamics and deep learning technologies and may reveal a new concept for CDEs solving and uncertainty propagation.


DeepVigor: Vulnerability Value Ranges and Factors for DNNs' Reliability Assessment

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) and their accelerators are being deployed ever more frequently in safety-critical applications leading to increasing reliability concerns. A traditional and accurate method for assessing DNNs' reliability has been resorting to fault injection, which, however, suffers from prohibitive time complexity. While analytical and hybrid fault injection-/analytical-based methods have been proposed, they are either inaccurate or specific to particular accelerator architectures. In this work, we propose a novel accurate, fine-grain, metric-oriented, and accelerator-agnostic method called DeepVigor that provides vulnerability value ranges for DNN neurons' outputs. An outcome of DeepVigor is an analytical model representing vulnerable and non-vulnerable ranges for each neuron that can be exploited to develop different techniques for improving DNNs' reliability. Moreover, DeepVigor provides reliability assessment metrics based on vulnerability factors for bits, neurons, and layers using the vulnerability ranges. The proposed method is not only faster than fault injection but also provides extensive and accurate information about the reliability of DNNs, independent from the accelerator. The experimental evaluations in the paper indicate that the proposed vulnerability ranges are 99.9% to 100% accurate even when evaluated on previously unseen test data. Also, it is shown that the obtained vulnerability factors represent the criticality of bits, neurons, and layers proficiently. DeepVigor is implemented in the PyTorch framework and validated on complex DNN benchmarks.


Reachability Verification Based Reliability Assessment for Deep Reinforcement Learning Controlled Robotics and Autonomous Systems

Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has achieved impressive performance in robotics and autonomous systems (RASs). A key impediment to its deployment in real-life operations is the spuriously unsafe DRL policies--unexplored states may lead the agent to make wrong decisions that may cause hazards, especially in applications where end-to-end controllers of the RAS were trained by DRL. In this paper, we propose a novel quantitative reliability assessment framework for DRL-controlled RASs, leveraging verification evidence generated from formal reliability analysis of neural networks. A two-level verification framework is introduced to check the safety property with respect to inaccurate observations that are due to, e.g., environmental noises and state changes. Reachability verification tools are leveraged at the local level to generate safety evidence of trajectories, while at the global level, we quantify the overall reliability as an aggregated metric of local safety evidence, according to an operational profile. The effectiveness of the proposed verification framework is demonstrated and validated via experiments on real RASs.


A generic physics-informed neural network-based framework for reliability assessment of multi-state systems

In this paper, we leverage the recent advances in physics-informed neural network (PINN) and develop a generic PINN-based framework to assess the reliability of multi-state systems (MSSs). The proposed methodology consists of two major steps. In the first step, we recast the reliability assessment of MSS as a machine learning problem using the framework of PINN. A feedforward neural network with two individual loss groups are constructed to encode the initial condition and state transitions governed by ordinary differential equations (ODEs) in MSS. Next, we tackle the problem of high imbalance in the magnitude of the back-propagated gradients in PINN from a multi-task learning perspective. Particularly, we treat each element in the loss function as an individual task, and adopt a gradient surgery approach named projecting conflicting gradients (PCGrad), where a task's gradient is projected onto the norm plane of any other task that has a conflicting gradient. The gradient projection operation significantly mitigates the detrimental effects caused by the gradient interference when training PINN, thus accelerating the convergence speed of PINN to high-precision solutions to MSS reliability assessment. With the proposed PINN-based framework, we investigate its applications for MSS reliability assessment in several different contexts in terms of time-independent or dependent state transitions and system scales varying from small to medium. The results demonstrate that the proposed PINN-based framework shows generic and remarkable performance in MSS reliability assessment, and the incorporation of PCGrad in PINN leads to substantial improvement in solution quality and convergence speed.


Exploring Uncertainty Measures for Image-Caption Embedding-and-Retrieval Task

With the wide development of black-box machine learning algorithms, particularly deep neural network (DNN), the practical demand for the reliability assessment is rapidly rising. On the basis of the concept that `Bayesian deep learning knows what it does not know,' the uncertainty of DNN outputs has been investigated as a reliability measure for the classification and regression tasks. However, in the image-caption retrieval task, well-known samples are not always easy-to-retrieve samples. This study investigates two aspects of image-caption embedding-and-retrieval systems. On one hand, we quantify feature uncertainty by considering image-caption embedding as a regression task, and use it for model averaging, which can improve the retrieval performance. On the other hand, we further quantify posterior uncertainty by considering the retrieval as a classification task, and use it as a reliability measure, which can greatly improve the retrieval performance by rejecting uncertain queries. The consistent performance of two uncertainty measures is observed with different datasets (MS COCO and Flickr30k), different deep learning architectures (dropout and batch normalization), and different similarity functions.
